You deserve better, chairman tells fans

By Chris Flanagan »

WOLVES chairman Doug Hoyle has admitted that the fans deserve better than what they have witnessed this season and is keen that victory against Castleford on Monday signals the start of a run of form.

The second-half collapse in Friday's 38-14 defeat at Wigan heaped the pressure back on long-serving boss Paul Cullen, with many fans calling for a change in coach to improve the fortunes of a side that have slipped to sixth in Super League and were last week knocked out of the cup at St Helens.

"What we need is a result and we need to build on it"

Lord Hoyle

Further speculation surrounded a board meeting held at the club on Monday but that was simply a scheduled monthly gathering.

The chairman understands the concerns of the fans, many of whom have made it clear on the Warrington Guardian website that they expected Wolves to challenge this season after the purchase of big-name players.

But Lord Hoyle, who is sympathetic that some of the overseas signings have taken time to settle, remains optimistic that Wolves can win Monday's home match against Castleford, which kicks off at 7.30pm.

And, firm in the belief that the current squad are capable of beating any team in Super League, he hopes they can then recover their season by getting as far into the top six as possible.

He said: "My view is the same as everyone else's.

"We're not happy with the way we've been playing.

"Obviously we were not expecting it with the team that's been put together but there's been a lack of form with players adjusting to a new country and a new climate. We've not seen the best of them.

"We understand the fans' disappointment.

"We've not had consistent form but I'm sure we can do it because we've got quality players and hopefully it can start against Castleford."

The Wolves board have always had a policy of not piling unnecessary extra pressure on their coach and, asked whether there was an urgency for the club's plight to change, Lord Hoyle said: "The only urgency is in the results because everyone is disappointed.

"We produced a good performance against St Helens, although we didn't win.

"Nobody is more devoted to Warrington than Paul Cullen. He lives for this club, it's his lifeblood and it was always his ambition to become the coach.

"Let's not forget the crucial thing he did for us when we could have gone down (Cullen saved the club from relegation shortly after joining the club in 2002).

"And we've had horrendous injuries, I think that's four we've lost for the season.

"It was unfortunate to lose Reardon who was coming back to his best and Bridge has been a miss as well as young Pickersgill and Wood.

"I think everyone wants a run of results where we put it together and have some consistent form.

"What we need is a result and we need to build on it.

"But I just want to thank the fans for being so loyal and for standing by us. You deserve better and we believe we can give you that."

Lord Hoyle gives us a balanced mature response.
yet lord Hoyles response is the politically correct one not the one that the fans and im sure some of the players want to hear .
the gates will be down against Cas ,qwe might even win and the fans will grown againthat this will be hailed asa huge victory and turning point for the Wire ,i know it wonr be and the rest of the fans know it wont be .
Paul Cullne has got the players he wanted ,yet we are ot of the challenge cup again and Saints or not we should have a team now that can beat the Saints at this rate we are looking at " years before we will have a one off victory against them as for Leeds well we can only hope for a long tailback on the M^" both ways to stop the inevitable there .
On a positive note i believe the board will act decisvely soon they have no choice money talks and the reputations of the board members are at stake as well .
As for Paul Cullen personally i cannot comment about the man but as a coach he doesn't inspire the fans to belive we will have a consistant formidable team on the pitch for one or two seasons winning silverware .
I hope that i am totally wrong about the negative comments i am making and that Paul does have the right squad to turn the next 2 years into something memorable for the fans and players .

If a world class player like Matt King cant explain what is happening then one can only conclude tactically we are clueless. The root cause of our problems is our soft / gutless defence, for which the coach must take the blame. PC is a good man, but my 5 year old son could out coach him. Brian Noble left his two big props on the bench, knowing that they would cause havoc in the second-half, which they did. This is not the players fault, as it wasnt Brent Grose, Henry Faafilli, Sid Domic, Gary Hulse, Paul Noone, Mike Wainwrights etc.. As I said I am glad to no longer be a season ticket holder and happy that I am on holiday Monday.

What annoys me is the when (or RATHER IF) we beat Cas then everyone at the club will say we are well on the way, trophies to come, success around the corner, etc, etc. One lousy win at home to the bottom placed team is all it takes yet, you know what? victory is in serious doubt.
Cullen has written his own epitaph after the Wigan game by saying that he wouldn't have changed a thing even in hindsight. He says he would have chosen exactly the same team in exactly the same shape. Well, that means that if we played Wigan again tomorrow, we would acheive exactly the same result!!! Nothing like learning from your setbacks is there?

Yet again we are told to give the professonal players time to ajust, why should we as they get paid good money for doing their job.I would be sacked if I didnt perform at work so why do we as fans have to put up with excuses?Paul Cullen loves the club but he now needs to step down and let a coach come in and salvage this season before its to late,Mr Moran must be very upset at the lack of performance considering the amount of money he has spent. The cash that Paul Cullen has had is crazy and he cannot get the players to perform,do the right thing Paul quit for the sake of the club.

Doug Hoyle stating the blinding obvious. Well he learned something during that part of his life when he was a politicain; lots of words, no commitments, tells you nothing that you don't know already, talks about the future and how great it's going to be whilst not accepting any responsibility for any of the boards decisions or lack of decisions.

Yes we do deserve better and no I don't believe you can give us that. I suppose if we get a win over Castleford, that's considered the end of it.

It's time for a change. Sorry, PC you are and have been Wire through and through, but enough is enough.

I always find that when Doug has something to say in the paper we are in desparate state of affairs, remember his gaff when we were about to sign Neil Kelly as coach, oops.

Change is needed and sooner than later. The clock is ticking.

The fact that Doug Hoyle has had to give his opion is the beginning of the end for Cullen. The dreaded vote of confidance before the axe falls. I have got nothing against PC as a man but he is completely out of his depth. Teams have improved across the board in super league so conversly coaches also have to step up, most have, ours hasn't along with one or two others. Nothing less than 40 points on Cas will do on Monday but I fear the worst. What will the reaction be if we get beat?. It's not going to be good, and we might be looking for a new coach Monday night. If you are going to the game see you there and try to enjoy it I know I will. NOW THE WIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tezzerwolf, I hope that you are not tempting fate by saying that you are "going to enjoy it" on Monday night (the match that is). I will be there with my family, as usual, but 40 points is asking a bit to much.
I would be happy with a win with 1 point, but still stand by my comments above (about 4 people behind this comment).

this will be intesting on how many warrington fans actually call for cullens head if we just go at a canter on monday,
the wheels have almost certainly fell off and still paul cullen believes in his ability to coach at the top level HOW does this fellow get away with it at all ?
Just look how justin morgan has got Hull K R going !
only been up a couple of seasons but even Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder can see the man has done a good job for the hkr
Cullen now seems to think he can waffle his way out of trouble by the injury trick that seems to save him season after season but now with a bit of luck hes a dead man walking
