THE dog that savaged a swan at Sankey Valley Park has been destroyed.
Police have confirmed that the dog was a pit-bull type and, on learning this, the owner signed the dog over to officers to be put down.
Inspector Brian Heywood, of Warrington West neighbourhood policing unit, said: "On Saturday, May 17, a warrant was executed - under the Dangerous Dogs Act - at a house in Kirkstone Avenue, Orford, and a white dog was seized.
"The man, who was walking the dog, is not the owner of the dog. He was traced on Friday after a member of the public approached CSO Scott Parkinson in Sankey Valley Park and said that they had seen the man nearby.
"The man came into Sankey Police Station where he was interviewed by police, who are working closely with the RSPCA, and investigations are continuing into the incident."
The brutal attack sparked public outrage after the Warrington Guardian published a picture of the attack on its front page, with many people coming forward to complain about dangerous dogs being allowed off their leads across Warrington's parks and reporting vicious dogs in their neighbourhoods.
One anonymous phone message said a dog, which looked similar to the pit-bull type that attacked the swan last Friday, was seen to kill a Persian cat in Orford last week.

So just let me get this correct...the man in the photo didn't own the dog but was out walking it OFF THE LEAD???? And, despite the fact that it had already attacked the swan once, he still didn't think it was necessary to put the lead back on??? Does this man have a brain?
